Breast Cancer Screening with Mammogram
Mammograms are the gold standard in breast cancer screening because they save lives. Using mammogram images, physicians can diagnose breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stage. The Association of Alexandria Radiologists offers traditional 2D mammograms as well as 3D mammography, which provides a more detailed layer-by-layer view of each breast. Annual mammograms are recommended for all women beginning at age 40.
Osteoporosis Screening with DEXA
A DEXA scan is a simple and painless exam that uses low dose x-ray to allow radiologists to measure bone density and calculate your risk for Osteoporosis or its precursor, Osteopenia. Known as a silent disease, Osteoporosis often has no symptoms, so screening exams are essential to early detection and avoiding broken bones. All DEXA scans performed by Association of Alexandria Radiologists also include a vertebral fracture assessment (VFA), which can lead to back pain, loss of height, immobility and even reduced pulmonary function. Osteoporosis screening is recommended for women age 65 and older and men age 70 and older.
Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening with Ultrasound
Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is caused by clogged arteries in the legs or arms. PAD often occurs in older adults and may dismissed as “just a part of getting older,” but it is treatable. The most common symptom is claudication, which is leg pain that occurs when walking or exercising that disappears when at rest. PAD screening is recommended for men and women over age 50 with any of the following:
- Family or personal history of vascular disease or high blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Current or former smoker
- Inactive lifestyle
- Pain in the legs during exercise that is relieved when resting
- Pain in legs or feet that awakens you at night
Lung Cancer Screening
Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in men and women. However, when caught early, treatment is more effective and survival rates are much higher. Lung cancer screening with low dose CT is recommended for men and women aged 55-74 who meet the following criteria:
- Current or former smoker with a 30-pack year history, calculated using this formula: Pack-Years = (number of packs smoked per day) x (number of years smoked)
- Current smoker or have quit in the last 15 years
- No history of lung cancer
Colorectal Cancer Screening with Virtual Colonoscopy
A virtual colonoscopy is a more comfortable alternative to colorectal cancer screening with traditional colonoscopy. Virtual colonoscopy is performed using a CT machine and special software that creates a 3D image of the interior lining of the large intestine, colon and rectum. Colorectal cancer screening is recommended for all men and women over the age of 50 every 7-10 years.
