General X-ray imaging
An X-ray study takes images of bones and soft tissues using very low amounts of radiation. The images help healthcare providers diagnose a wide range of conditions and plan treatments. Typically, referring physicians order X-rays to evaluate broken bones, dislocated joints, and other bone injuries. At Alexandria Radiology, we offer walk-in X-ray services Monday through Friday at our Alexandria and Woodbridge locations. Our affordable time-of-service payment options allow patients to get the care they need without the added stress of insurance concerns.
Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is a specialized imaging technique that uses contrast to evaluate specific areas of the body, including the bones, muscles, joints, and organs such as the heart, lungs, and kidneys. Fluoroscopy imaging uses a continuous X-ray beam to obtain real-time images that help the radiologist provide an accurate diagnosis for your referring physician to rule out a health issue or determine the best treatment plan.
At the Woodbridge location, our experienced clinical team offers two specific fluoroscopy studies: arthrograms and hysterosalpingograms.

Arthrogram
Visualizing joint injuries and conditions
An arthrogram is a diagnostic imaging test that is performed to evaluate the condition of the joints, including the shoulder, hip, wrist, and knee. During the procedure, a small amount of contrast material is injected into the joint space, which makes it easier to see the joint structures on X-ray images.
Fluoroscopy is the imaging type used for arthrograms. It is a special X-ray technique that allows the radiologist to see internal organs in motion. During the arthrogram, the radiologist uses fluoroscopy to guide the needle into the joint space and inject the contrast material.
The procedure can help to diagnose conditions such as tears in the ligaments, cartilage or joint capsule, as well as inflammation or fluid accumulation within the joint space. Patients may experience some discomfort during the procedure, which usually lasts about 30 minutes. Following the procedure, patients may be asked to avoid strenuous activity for a short period of time.
Hysterosalpingography
A diagnostic imaging procedure for women's reproductive health
Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an imaging procedure that uses a special form of x-ray called fluoroscopy and a contrast material to examine a woman’s uterus and fallopian tubes. The technique of fluoroscopy allows the radiologist to visualize the internal organs in motion, helping to evaluate the structure and function of the uterus and fallopian tubes.
The HSG procedure is mainly recommended for women who have difficulty becoming pregnant, as it helps to assess any congenital abnormalities, scarring, or masses inside the uterus and tubes leading to the ovaries. Additionally, it can be used to investigate repeated miscarriages and to monitor the effects of tubal surgery.
