Vola Lawson Breast Cancer Memorial Fund
In 1994, former City Manager Vola Lawson established the Alexandria Walk to Fight Breast Cancer. The Walk and subsequent fund raising like Couture for A Cure have helped over 9,000 uninsured and under insured Alexandria women receive free mammograms and other diagnostic screenings.
The Annual Walk to Fight Breast Cancer was permanently cancelled in 2014, but to ensure that women who remain in need of critical screenings, the City of Alexandria government established the Vola Lawson Breast Cancer Memorial Fund. The Fund is named in honor of Vola Lawson who passed away in December 2013.
In 2014 the Association of Alexandria Radiologists established a breast cancer awareness community event which has evolved into the Couture for A Cure fashion show. During the past 3 years over $38,000 has been raised for the Fund and we hope to continue this new tradition to help support breast cancer awareness in the Alexandria area.
