Benefits of the NanoKnife Procedure

The NanoKnife is a new advanced technology that allows interventional radiologists to treat tumors that would otherwise be considered too complicated or virtually impossible for surgeons to operate on due to location. Nanoknife is currently used to treat tumors of the liver, lungs, kidneys, and pancreas. It is best suited to smaller tumors less than 5 centimeters, for which radiation therapy or surgery is not an option.

Nanoknife is different from CyberKnife and traditional surgery because it can be completed much more quickly and with far less recovery time. Recovery from a NanoKnife procedure includes no significant medical restrictions and patients may resume normal activities, as they feel ready to do so. In addition, NanoKnife may be used for patients who have already had surgery or chemotherapy and cannot utilize those options again.

What to Expect During the NanoKnife Procedure

During the procedure, the patient is placed under general anesthesia. A CT scanner is used to pinpoint the exact location of the tumor and electrodes are inserted into the proper position. The electrodes deliver quick bursts of precisely-targeted electrical energy to kill hard-to-reach tumors at the cellular level. Surrounding tissue, veins, and nerves are minimally affected. The entire procedure lasts about 1-1.5 hours. No stitches or staples are necessary – just a small bandage. After the NanoKnife procedure, pain and side effects are minimal. Most patients leave the hospital the day after the operation.

Benefits of the NanoKnife Procedure

  • No large incisions, stitches or staples
  • Quick recovery with no major medical restrictions
  • Minimal pain and side effects
  • Less damage to surrounding tissue when compared to alternatives
  • Procedure can be repeated on new tumors
