Case 11
History:
Neonate with left paranasal blue mass
Findings:
Axial and coronal reconstruction images showing a cystic mast extending from the medial canthus into the nasal cavity along the nasolacrimal duct.
Diagnosis:
Dacryocystocele
Discussion:
Dacryocystoceles are neonatal tense blue-gray masses located at the inferomedial canthus. They are the result of congenital obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct. CT and MR images show cystic mass that extends from the inferomedial canthus into the nasal cavity, along the course of the nasolacrimal duct. Dacryocystoceles should be treated promptly to prevent secondary infection. Treatments include manual pressure, probing with irrigation, and, in severe cases, which are rare, endoscopic resection and marsupialization.
