64-Slice Cardiac CT
State-of-the-art 64-slice Cardiac CT scans use highly specialized equipment to create cross-sectional images of the heart at an unprecedented speed. Unlike two-dimensional “Calcium Scoring” heart scans, these advanced three-dimensional CT scans show soft plaque buildup and/or blockages as well as calcified plaques. Because soft plaques are the most common cause of heart attacks, Cardiac CT scans can help your doctor make the best diagnosis and determine the best treatment for you. Cardiac CT imaging is approved by the FDA.
About the Procedure
The exam itself takes about 15 – 30 minutes. Typically a contrast agent is administered (injection or oral) to improve the image quality of the areas being scanned. Depending on your heart rate, you may be prescribed a beta blocker, a class of medications typically used to slow your heartbeat. If this is necessary, its use will be short-term and the effects will be temporary for exam purposes only.
Who Should Consider a Cardiac CT
Anyone with the following risk factors may want to consider a Cardiac CT:
- Family history of heart disease
- Elevated Calcium Score
- History of smoking
- High blood pressure or cholesterol levels
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- Positive C-reactive protein
If you have symptoms of known or suspected heart disease, you should contact your physician for a referral if he feels the test is appropriate. If you have no symptoms, you may elect to have this procedure as a screening exam only, which does not require an order from your physician.
Cardiac CT may be covered by some insurance companies under very specific circumstances which may be identified by your primary care physician. You should contact your insurance carrier to discuss the coverage offered by your specific plan.
