Breast MRI
Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive examination used to detect breast cancer. It can identify cancers that cannot be seen by other imaging modalities, such as mammography or ultrasound.
Breast MRI uses a large magnet, radio waves and computers to create high quality detailed images of the breast. MRI does not use ionizing radiation (X-rays).
MRI of the breast is not a replacement for mammography or ultrasound imaging but rather a supplemental tool for detecting and staging breast cancer and other breast abnormalities.
Is Breast MRI right for me?
- Assess multiple tumor locations, especially prior to surgery
- Identify early breast cancer not detected by other imaging exams, especially in women with dense breast tissue and those at high risk for the disease
- Further evaluate abnormalities detected by mammography or ultrasound
- Distinguish between scar tissue and recurrent tumors
- Determine whether cancer detected by mammography, ultrasound, or after surgical biopsy has spread further in the breast or into the chest wall
- Assess the effect of chemotherapy
- Provide additional information on a diseased breast to make treatment decisions
- Determine the integrity of breast implants
The American Cancer Society recommends that certain women with an especially high risk of developing breast cancer get MRI scans along with their yearly mammogram. The two tests together give doctors a better chance of finding breast cancer early in these women, when it is easier to treat and the chance of survival is greatest.
